The Underwater Series came about from spending
years watching my young son swim. The images were begun the summer of 1987, when I
acquired an underwater Nikon and shot swim team members in many different poses, usually
without heads. The parts of the bodies underwater created a feeling of ghost-like quality
to the figures, which intrigued me at the time. The transparencies were stored, however,
with no idea of what would happen to them. In 1997, I began the Water Series using the
computer to combine figures in different configurations. The underwater images surfaced
again as a part of the digital work that was beginning to take shape on my computer.
